  U.S. paper and board production in August (unadjusted) was 8.37 million tons, up 157,000 tons from July. For the year-to-date through August, production was up a slight 0.9% compared with the same 1998 period. Paper production was 3.94 million tons, up from July and up 3.5% from August 1998; and paperboard was 4.43 million tons, a 2.7% increase from the month before and up 5% from August last year.

Pulp production was 5.44 million tons and market pulp shipments totaled 697,000 tons. For the eight months, market pulp shipments were up 3.2% compared with last year’s period.

In Canada woodpulp production was 2.1 million mtons in August, a 10% increase from August 1998 Chemical paper-grade woodpulp mill inventories stood at 696,000 mtons, down from 913,000 in August 1998.

Paper and paperboard production in August was 1.6 million mtons, a 7% increase from last year and eight months production of 13.3 million tons was 6% above the 1998 January through August period.
