  U.S. paper and paperboard production rose 3.9% in October from September to 8.4 million tons (unadjusted). October 1999 production was 4.7% higher than the 1998 month. For the first 10 months of the year, production rose 1.6% compared with the 1998 period, according to the American Forest & Paper Assn.

In paper, uncoated free-sheet shipments through October rose 2.4% over last year, and uncoated groundwood declined 3.3%. In paperboard, bleached and recycled showed strong gains for the 10-month period over last year. Paper shipments of 3.88 million rose 0.7% in October over October 1998; paperboard shipments rose 8.4%.

Woodpulp production was 5.3 million tons in October, a 4.1% increase from September. U.S. market woodpulp shipments in October were 685,000 tons, an increase of 69,000 tons from October 1998. For the year through October, market pulp shipments were up 3.3% compared with 1998.

Canadian newsprint production in October of 788,000 mtons was up 2.8% over last year and for the 10 months, production rose 6.9%. total paper and paperboard production was 1.7 million mtons in October, a 12.3 % increase over October 1998.
