  Total U.S. paper and paperboard production in December totaled more than 8 million tons, a 5.4% increase over the year-ago month, according to the American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA). For 1999, U.S. paper and paperboard production stood at 96.5 million tons, a 2.2% increase over the year-ago period, AF&PA said.

U.S. paper production was up 1.7% for the month and the year, AF&PA said, with 1999 production totaling 45.5 million tons. U.S. production of paperboard increased 8.9% for the month and 2.6% for the year, totaling just over 51 million tons during 1999, AF&PA said.

U.S. paper imports totaled 16.5 million tons through November, a 9.1% increase over the year-ago period, according to AF&PA. Imports of newsprint from Canada were up 7.1% through November at 6.4 million tons. U.S. paper exports were down 4.4% for the year at 10.8 million tons.

Corrugated box shipments totaled 405 billion ft2 in 1999, a 2.4% increase over 1998, according to the Fibre Box Assn.
